Budget 2022 Comments: Opportunity to build resilience in critical sectors

The upcoming budget represents an opportunity to build resilience in the critical sectors that will form the backbone of the country's future-facing economic ambitions. This however needs to be achieved in the context of managing the community sectors most impacted by COVID-19 over the past two years. The Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family) approach, which is empathic and inclusive, is both timely and an appropriate approach to address those most impacted. Policy stability, especially those policies directly impacting foreign investors, remains important for business continuity. At the same time, well-managed policy developments that have taken into consideration the views of all related stakeholders and the community are welcome as the country continues to mature on its journey as a leading democracy in the region. Recent announcements by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob around Operational Safety and Health and Disaster Management are good examples, which have identified leakages upwards [...]

Hindsight is the new foresight

The current floods that have impacted various parts of the country have given rise to an extensive commentary on the response cycles of various stakeholders.  It has in turn led to continued crisis communications and statements in the media by agencies and ministries alike.  This binary approach to the discussion has also created a perceived “us and them” situation when in a crisis of this nature there should only be “we”. This is free business intelligence, especially if the business model is keeping people happy and safe.  Don’t let the critical data go the way of the flood waters – simply flowing into the oceans or seeping back into the soil. The challenge will be organising the information into a meaningful framework. [...]

The Inescapable Reality of Crisis

We live in the age of crisis. At the heart of any crisis is the threat of rapid change. Change too deep or too wide that the current coping mechanisms for an individual, corporation or government are unable to remain resilient. An unwelcome paradigm shift, like the proverbial spider, that catches unprepared decision makers off guard in a web of entanglement. Yet, crisis has become an advanced business strategy, a political survival strategy, a cunning military strategy. That means everything can and eventually will be weaponised to achieve a strategic objective. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in seemingly obscure components of a critical value chain. Malaysia has seen several prime examples in recent times – palm oil, the glove industry and, as of a few days ago, the semiconductor sectors received external pressure due to their critical importance in defence technologies. What critical value chain do you find yourself [...]
